Tips on How to make a Small Space look Larger

Making a small space look larger involves a combination of design techniques that create an illusion of space and maximize the available area. There are many things that cause a small space to feel even smaller from the scale of the furniture to clutter.

Here are some tips to make a small space appear larger:

Use Light Wall Colors: Light colors, especially whites and pastels, reflect more light and make a space feel open and airy.

Some of my favorite Sherwin Williams paint colors for walls are Snowbound, Drift of Mist, Alabaster and Incredible White.

Opt for Light-Colored Flooring:

Light-colored flooring, such as light wood or light-colored carpets, can contribute to the overall brightness of the space. If you already have dark flooring, look for light-colored rugs.

Maximize Natural Light: Allow as much natural light as possible into the space. Use sheer curtains or blinds to let light in while maintaining privacy. Natural light creates a sense of openness.

Hang Curtains High and Wide: Hanging curtains closer to the ceiling and extending them beyond the window frame creates the illusion of larger windows and higher ceilings.

Strategic Mirror Placement: Mirrors can create the illusion of space by reflecting light and making the room feel more expansive. Place mirrors opposite windows or in areas where they can reflect a significant portion of the room.

Keep Space Clutter-Free: Clutter can make a small space feel even smaller. Keep the space organized and clutter-free by choosing furniture with hidden storage and regularly decluttering unnecessary items.

Create Vertical Storage: Utilize vertical space for storage by installing tall shelves or cabinets. This not only maximizes storage but also draws the eye upward, giving the illusion of height.

Keep Decor Simple: Avoid overly busy or intricate patterns that can make a small space feel cramped. Stick to simpler designs for furniture and decor and a light color palette.

Create Visual Continuity: Use similar colors and materials throughout the space to create a sense of continuity. This minimizes visual interruptions and makes the room feel more cohesive.

Create a Focal Point: Designate a focal point in the room to draw attention away from the size. This could be a piece of artwork, a statement furniture item, or an interesting architectural feature.

Furniture:

  • Wall-Mounted Furniture: Consider wall-mounted furniture, such as floating shelves or wall-mounted desks, to free up floor space and create a more open look.

  • Choose Dual-Purpose Furniture: Invest in furniture that serves dual purposes, such as a sofa bed, storage ottomans, or a dining table that can also be used as a workspace.

  • Scale Furniture Appropriately: Select furniture that is proportionate to the size of the room. Avoid bulky or oversized furniture that can overwhelm a small space. Consider furniture with legs to create a sense of openness. Look for furniture with a slim profile and space-saving features. Foldable or stackable furniture can be useful in a small space.

  • Choose Furniture with Exposed Legs: Furniture with exposed legs creates a sense of openness by allowing light to flow underneath. This can contribute to the perception of more floor space.

Remember, the key is to create a sense of openness and avoid overwhelming the space with too many elements. Thoughtful design choices and a focus on functionality can go a long way in making a small space appear larger and more inviting.
