What you need to know about window treatments especially draperies...

Let's first discuss some terminology...Window treatments are decorative such as a valance or draperies. Window coverings covers the window such as shades or blinds.

Today, I am going to focus more on the window treatment DRAPERIES, also know as curtain panels. The selection and placement of these panels can help set the mood and improve the design of any room. We will dig into Fabric Selection, Color, Size and Installation Height, and Rod Size.

Hanging draperies right below crown elongates windows and makes ceiling appear higher.

Drapery Fabric Selection

There are so many fabrics to choose from we can help narrow down the selection based on your needs, style, and look you are trying to achieve!

Here is a list of the most commonly used fabrics:

Sheer - Vary in transparency and can let in a lot of natural light; gives a more lightweight and airy feel

Silk - More formal, luxury style, classic and will need to be lined if you want more privacy or want to block out light

Linen - More casual and varies in transparency from letting in light to blackout

Cotton - Easy to clean, available in many colors, versatile

Velvet - Heavyweight, rich and luxury style, blocks natural light

Drapery Color

Again, so many options...How do you choose which one?

White - Gives a more light and airy feel; perfect for a neutral space

Blue/Green - Can be soothing and compliment the same color in other tones. We will get into other colors just a few lines down.

Grey - Also works well with a neutral space

Black - Dramatic look

Other Solid Colors - Maybe you already have lots of bold patterns in the space that you do not want to compete with, go solid. Maybe there is a piece of art that you want to pull out one color, go solid.

Pattern/Printed - Bold or subtle, these can add some fun to your space

Drapery Size

Width

Rule of thumb, total width should be no less than 1.5 the width of your window but this also depends on type of fabric you selected. Sheers should be 2-3x wider than your window size. Based on the size of the window, you may only need one panel.

Height

This is where I see the most common mistake.

Height of your panel depends on the height of your ceiling and size of crown moulding. I always plan on the rod and hardware to be 3" below the crown moulding. This elongates your windows, can make the ceiling appear taller, and really enhances the space. Measure 3" below the crown moulding to the floor for your panel length. Then round up to the nearest curtain panel size if using standard lengths. My rule of thumb is that it is always better to go longer than shorter. Puddling drapes on the floor give a more romantic feel and looks beautiful in formal spaces (formal living, dining, or master bedroom).

Drapery Rod Length

The curtain rod should extend 3"-6" past your window frame. If you have multiple windows close together, consider installing one long rod that goes past that extends past the first and last window.

Selecting the correct correct fabric, color, size for your window treatments based on your needs and style will enhance any space. Knowing the "why" behind the design is so important and these details really make the difference.
